Police appeal following cable theft

POLICE are appealing after thieves stole hundreds of metres of telephone cabling from land in Partington.

The thieves cut through the copper cables on land behind Inglewood Close, prised it out of the ground and stole it.

Engineers worked around the clock over a two-week period to repair and restore service in the area, which caused significant disruption to approximately 700 residents and businesses in the Partington area.

Police are now asking anyone who is offered copper or telecom cabling or who has information about the theft to come forward.

"Disruption to these lines could have devastating consequences in the event of emergency and could stop someone from getting through to the emergency services."
Detective Constable Rachel Ostick

Detective Constable Rachel Ostick at Stretford CID said: "The theft affected several hundreds of lines, both residential and commercial, in the Partington area. Any disruption to these lines could have devastating consequences in the event of emergency and could stop someone from getting through to the emergency services, but clearly these thieves have not taken that into account.

"The offenders used a power tool and went to great lengths to steal the copper cables. But what they do not realise is that their actions could be putting someone's life at risk.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and contact police."

Anyone with information about the incident, which took place sometime between 3 and 9pm on March 9, is asked to call Stretford CID on 0161 856 7667 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
