Colne 0 Trafford 2
TRAFFORD restored their 10-point lead over Salford at the top of the Vodkat League with a clinical 2-0 victory over Colne in Arctic conditions in the Lancashire hills.
Despite playing into the gale force and bitter wind in the first half, Trafford made light of the conditions and in the second minute Andy Lundy netted but was marginally offside.
Scott Metcalfe wasted a free kick from a great position in the seventh minute but Trafford were rewarded for their superiority three minutes later when Chris Mackay swung the ball to the back post where Lundy rose to head past Mark Crossley.
Trafford's defence was magnificent throughout with keeper Tom Read rarely troubled and in the 29th minute Scott Barlow had a glorious chance to make it two but failed to connect properly from five yards.
Colne's Neil Harris drove in a speculative shot from 25 yards that Read tipped over and then Mackay was on hand to clear a header by Steven Hall off the line as Colne pressed just before half time.
In the 41st minute the visitors received a setback when midfield dynamo Harry Winter was forced to leave the field due to a hip injury and was replaced by Kayde Coppin.
With the wind in their favour, Trafford dominated the second half for long spells and doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Mackay, Metcalfe and Lundy combined to release Barlow who coolly fired past substitute keeper Michael Rosser from the edge of the penalty area.
Barlow fired over in the 68th minute following another lightning fast break and seven minutes later Trafford put together a glorious five-man move that ended with Colne defender Ben Howarth clearing Metcalfe's goalbound shot off the line.
In the 88th minute Mackay produced a sublime piece of skill when he cracked a magnificent shot from the half way line that Rosser pushed over the crossbar and in the dying seconds substitute Dion Depeiaza surged past five defenders but fired past the far post with the goal at his mercy.
